Fed: Aust urged to vote for Opera House for seven wonders
SYDNEY, Aug 8 AAP - Sydney Opera House's chief executive is urging all Australians
to vote for the iconic landmark as one of the new seven wonders of the world.
The Opera House is Australia's only nominee and one of 21 finalists competing for the
title, which will be announced by the New7Wonders Foundation, the body behind the campaign,
on July 7, 2007.
It is the youngest candidate to be nominated, competing against historical gems such
as the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal and the Eiffel Tower.
Online voting was launched across the globe in March 2006 and votes can be submitted
until July 6, 2007.
"As Australia's only nomination, we believe we will get the full support from Australians
around the globe," Sydney Opera House chief executive Norman Gillespie said in a statement.
The New7Wonders website says the aim of the global vote is to document, maintain, restore
and reconstruct world heritage under the motto: Our Heritage Is Our Future.
To vote for Sydney Opera House by phone, dial 1902 977 777 or text SOH to 1977 7717.
Visit www.new7wonders.com to register your vote online.
