NSW: Proposed amendments to gun laws sensible, NSW govt says

SYDNEY, Dec 14 AAP - Amendments to NSW laws proposed by the Shooters Party that remove
a waiting period to buy guns are sensible, the NSW government says.

The change, which removes a 28-day waiting period for people wanting to buy a second
gun, makes the system more efficient, NSW Police Minister Tony Kelly says.

"The whole purpose of the 28-day waiting period when you get your first gun is so the
police could check you out," Mr Kelly told reporters in Sydney on Sunday.

"They've already done that, because you've already got a licence when you've got a gun."

He said the authorities would perform random checks covering registered gun owners
during the period of their five-year licence.

The amendments were made in June this year.

Meanwhile, the National Coalition of Gun Control says gun ownership in NSW has risen
at the rate of 10,000 a year since 2004, to 687,138 in October this year.
