NSW: Inquiry recommends impact study into Freightcorp sale

A parliamentary report calls on the New South Wales government to hold off selling
FreightCorp until it has determined the impact of such a move on the bush.

The upper house committee report, which followed an inquiry into the government's plans
to privatise the rail freight carrier, concedes jobs could be lost.

However, it also says holding onto FreightCorp could be bad for its employees if Canberra
goes ahead with its plans to sell its carrier, the National Rail Corporation.

The report says the government's greatest fear is that if the NRC is sold at a fire
sale price, the company could undercut FreightCorp when bidding for jobs.

It recommended the government work towards a joint sale of both carriers in a bid to
minimise job losses.
