QLD:Yasi upgraded to category 5 storm

Cyclone Yasi has been upgraded to a category five storm as it moves closer to the far
north Queensland coast.

Queensland Premier ANNA BLIGH has told Sky News .. it's an event of catastrophic proportions
.. and people need to prepare themselves mentally for a very tough 24 hours.

The storm is bearing down on Cairns and is expected to hit around 10pm (AEST) .. with
communities far to the north, south and west also braced for its fury.

Ms BLIGH says with major roads set to be closed later today .. people need to stay
calm to make the best possible decisions.

The Bureau of Meteorology says .. at four o'clock this morning (AEST) .. Yasi was 650
kilometres east northeast of Cairns .. and 650 kilometres northeast of Townsville.
