SA: Human shield back home from Baghdad
ADELAIDE, April 18 AAP - An Adelaide mother of two was due to return home today afterbeing a human shield in Baghdad.
Ruth Russell, 55, had been been in the Iraqi capital since mid-February, stationedat a food silo at Taji about 20 kilometres north-west of the Baghdad city centre withother peace activists.
Australian Democrats leader Andrew Bartlett expressed relief at the safe return ofMrs Russell, a party member.
"Ruth Russell has been witness to the destruction of war, a defender of food and watersupplies and a friend to the ordinary people of Iraq," he said in a statement today.
"As thousands of bombs dropped we knew that not just innocent strangers, but our innocentfriend, was in danger.
"We are thankful for Ruth's safe return and the fact that all Australian service personnelare still safe and well.
"I look forward to meeting with Ruth in coming weeks and hearing her stories."
Mrs Russell was due to return to Adelaide at 9.15pm CST today on a flight from Perth.
